Sort Money

Your spending is split across many apps.

Google Pay, PhonePe, CRED, your cards and your bank each show a slice. None of them tells you what you actually spent this month. Sort Money does, from the texts your bank already sends you.

Why it's hard to know

Every app shows a slice

Google Pay knows your UPI payments and the card app knows your card. Nothing adds up every bank, card and app you use.

Some money is counted twice

Pay a ₹7,420 card bill through CRED and it looks like ₹7,420 more spending, though you already spent it on the card. Moving money to your own savings looks like spending too.

Typing it all in doesn't last

Apps that need you to log every expense work for a week. Then a few get missed, and the totals stop meaning anything.

How Sort Money fixes it

Every payment you make already comes with a text from your bank. Sort Money turns those texts into one month, without anything leaving your phone.

Your bank texts you

An alert arrives for every payment, from any bank, card or UPI app.

It reads them on your phone

The amount, who was paid and the account. OTPs and personal texts are skipped and never saved.

It sorts and counts once

Each payment gets a category. Card bills and transfers to yourself stay visible but aren't counted again.

You see the whole month

What you spent, where it went, what's due next, and where this pace ends up.

Questions

Why does it need to read my SMS?

Your bank, card and UPI apps already send a text for every payment. Reading those is how Sort Money knows what you spent without you typing anything. Without SMS access it has nothing to show, so the app doesn't work without it.

Does it read my personal messages or OTPs?

No. It only looks at messages from business sender IDs, like VM-ICICIT. Messages from phone numbers and one-time passwords are skipped and never saved.

Which banks does it understand?

SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, IDFC FIRST, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Canara, Union Bank, IndusInd, Federal, YES, RBL, IDBI, AU, HSBC, American Express, SBI Card, OneCard, slice, and the Airtel and Paytm payments banks. If one of your messages isn't read, tap the amount and the payee once and it learns that format.

Can it pay bills or move money?

No. It only reads. It finds bills in due-date reminders and card statements and shows you what's coming up, but it never pays anything.

Can I add cash payments?

Yes. Tap + to add an expense or money in by hand, with a category, date and note.

How do I back up or move to a new phone?

Make a backup file in Privacy and backup. It's locked with a password you choose; keep it in Drive or Files and restore it on the new phone. You can also export everything as a CSV for Sheets or Excel.

Is there an iPhone version?

No. iPhones don't let apps read SMS, so Sort Money is Android only, on Android 8 and newer.

How do I delete everything?

In the app, open Privacy and backup and tap Delete all data. Uninstalling the app also removes everything it saved. Your SMS stay in your inbox either way.

Who makes it

I'm Aditya Singh, a developer in Gurugram. I pay with Google Pay, PhonePe, CRED and my cards, and no app showed me where the money went in one place. Every one of those payments already arrives as a text, so I built Sort Money to read them, on my phone and nowhere else.

How it's built: a native Android app in Kotlin. Every message is read and sorted on the phone itself, and the app has no internet permission, so there is no server and nothing to send to one. When a bank changes its message format, an update teaches the app the new one, and you can teach it yourself in the meantime.
